draw.io Training – Exercise 5: Create a tree diagram

Now that you’ve learnt how to insert and modify shapes, add text and use connectors, it’s time to put it all together. In this exercise you’ll learn some more advanced formatting options by using the format panel on the right hand side.

Your tasks:

Create the tree diagram as you see it below in a new, blank draw.io diagram.

  • Add shapes, text and connectors
  • Headings:
    • Font size: 24pt
    • Formatting: bold
  • Edit shapes:
    • Gradient: Tree Species, Conifers, Deciduous Trees
    • Single color
    • Line width (2pt)
    • Dashed line
  • Edit connectors:
    • Change the colors
    • Edit the arrows
    • Line width (2/3pt)
    • Rounded lines
  • Save and close the diagram.

Searching for shapes

Shapes can be found in the symbol library on the left. You can see additional shapes by clicking on More shapes at the bottom of the symbol library.

Tip: You can also search for shapes by using the search field at the top of the symbol library.

If you can’t find the correct shape to create this tree diagram, search for “rounded rectangle”.

draw.io - Text tab in the format panelEntering text

Click on a shape and start typing to enter text.

Text size, font and color can be adjusted in the Text tab of the format panel, in addition to the position of the text.

Tip: The text inside shapes will wrap automatically.

For a more detailed look at entering text, please watch the video in our earlier post.

draw.io - drawing a connector in the tree diagramClick and drag a connector from a connection point to another object’s connection point – it must be in a green circle to properly link the two shapes. Your connector won’t move from these connection points once you have created it.

You can link a connector to an edge (not a single connection point), by dragging the connector over the target shape until the outline is blue. Your connector may move around on this edge when the shape is moved on the drawing area.

You can draw connectors from the large blue arrows in the same manner.

Adjust the style of a connector by selecting it, then using the style tab in the format panel.

See our earlier post on the different ways to connect shapes in draw.io for more information.

draw.io - style tab in the formal panelEditing shapes

Shapes can be edited in the Style tab of the format panel on the right, just like connectors.
You can add gradients here, change the outline thickness, style, and colors.
